Sunshine Larry - the Mayor of Bath is a Cat

Sunshine Larry taking the spotlight during our Women’s History tour.

Orange cats have a rep. Quirky, flighty, spacey, diva. That’s any orange cat and no more so than Bath, Maine’s own Sunshine Larry. He’s been enjoying a bit of publicity (in the “sun” - get it?) recently and has been on TWO walking Tours, so I thought I’d do a bit of a round up.

His family adopted him from a local beloved cat rescue organization Paw in the Door. (Read their “back story” post that explains where he came from and what happened to his tail!) He is a former barn and street cat, and as such, must roam. He roams all over Bath, into people’s houses, businesses, the grocery store, the Hampton Inn, the Library, etc. He is visible, and despite his name, always has that “grumpy cat” look on his face. He is always up for pets from passersby, but is just as happy simply lolling in the sun, soaking up the charm of Bath.

On one hair-raising occasion recently, he was picked up and taken to Waterville by some visiting Colby students who mistakenly thought he was homeless. Luckily they saw all the “Missing Cat” pics on Facebook and returned him. And his family (for all our sakes) invested in an improved tracking tag for his collar.

Yes, humans are very interested in you Larry! The article spotlights Bath’s pet-friendliness - and Sunny’s origin story. Check out the May 2026 issue of Downeast for more on Larry and Bath!

Larry has been on TWO tours with Embark. On our Women’s History tour (below) he met us at the grand finale - the church where opera diva Emma Eames was discovered (at age 16, while singing hymns of course). Sunny’s tail-less-ness can be seen clearly in the photos (middle and right).

Larry recently held a “meet and greet” at Loyal Biscuit Co., our local pet store and was featured on News Center Maine! Watch the clip to see what his family says Sunny is thinking when you pet him…HINT: He loves being pet, despite his grumpy face!

This screen grab from the News Center Maine piece shows Sunny in the window at Loyal Biscuit Co. and you can just make out the tracking collar he now wears so his family can find him if he roams too far or too late.

Even when Sunny is not out and about, Bath residents can gaze upon his visage in not 1, not 2, but 3 banners featuring him in our annual springtime “Banners over Bath” exhibit. This one is on Centre Street in front of the equally charming Centre Street Gallery.

I highly recommend following Sunny’s Facebook page to stay up to date on all things Sunny! If only we could fit him with a GoPro to see where all his adventures take him. Until then, your best bet for a live siting is Library Park - or on a walking tour!
