“Meet the Maine teachers who take on 2nd jobs when school’s out”
That’s me! It was an honor to have a Portland Press Herald reporter and photographer join us for our Washington Street Neighborhood tour. We had a good group on the tour (pictured above), including a family visiting from the midwest and a couple from Vermont. The reporter, Linley, can just be seen to the left, in shorts and a ball cap.
Pictured here is my photo of the scene described in the story, where we ran into homeowner Marty Lakeman. Derek, the photographer, probably didn’t love being photographed himself. His advice to me was “Pretend I am not here.” Marty has shared a great story with me regarding his house and the Underground Railroad, which I share on the tour, but it’s always better to have him tell it!
I enjoyed reading about the other teachers as well. In my experience, most teachers have a hard time just “doing nothing” - so whether it is for economic necessity or just for fun, you are bound to meet some working teachers if you are out and about as a tourist or as a local, perhaps someone working behind a counter or as a tour guide. Ask them how school is going, what’s it like to be a teacher in Maine, or a favorite story from their year. We’d love to connect.
And of course, if you’d like to meet this teacher, join us on a walking tour in historic, charming Bath any time!
Print copy! No substitute! Friends and neighbors saved theirs for me so I can send around to family across country.
